This project was super easy and cheap to make. I will add all the links of everything I used below, or you can use whatever material or table you want. The table my sister bought JJ was a decent size, it was 29 1/2 x 46 1/4. So I knew I needed a bigger piece of material to cover the top of this. At first I was going to just glue felt to the train top but I didn't want to ruin the actual table in case JJ wants to play with the trains. I went to Hobby Lobby and looked around, I found this trifold foam board which was perfect and it was only $7.99. I knew I was going to keep the train top under whatever I was going to use so the material didn't have to be super thick but thick enough so it can cover those holes the train top has.
This is the train table that we have, again you can use any train table you'd like. The measurements however may be different.
So while walking around Hobby Lobby I was trying to think what I can use for grass. Obviously, I could use fake grass but when my husband and I went to check it out it was literally shedding just as we were picking it up. I wasn't having that, and I also felt like not all the animals my son has were going to stand good on it. Then we went to the fabric and I saw the green felt, which is what I was going to get but it didn't seem real enough for me. So we went over to the toy model section and that's where I found this fake "grass". It looks more real then the felt and it wasn't falling apart. However, when we opened it it has a little fall out but nothing compared to the other stuff. It was only $7.99 while the green felt was $7.99 a foot. What I really liked about this too was the backing is a paper material so I knew it would stick good to the foam board.
When we got home is when I got to work, I cut the foam board to the size I needed with a box cutter. I don't recommend using scissors for the foam board, they don't cut well. Once I had it all cut I took it in the garage and sprayed it with Gorilla Adhesive Spray Glue. You can use whatever you like but I always recommend using Gorilla Glue on anything, to me it works the best. I did section by section to make sure every piece gets glued down securely. Once I got the grass all glued down to the foam board I made sure there were no bubbles, and if there was I just pushed them out the side. I put a couple different things on top of the foam board and grass to make sure they adhesive together well. Finally, I trimmed all the excess grass off the edges so it covered perfectly.
After about 10 minutes I put the finished board right on the top of the train top. I added the pond with buying some light blue felt from Michael's for $.49 (I forgot it at Hobby Lobby, but they have it there too). I just added the extra pieces of grass from JJ's toys he already had around the pond to give it some dimension. I plan on adding some more trees and bushes as well, a fence for around the barn and even some hay bails.
I also still have to do the little ledge on the table. I have a plan of making that ledge some horse stables so JJ has somewhere to put his animals besides the barn. I have some leftover foam board for the back and then I'm just going to get some brown felt for the floor and make the fences out of popsicle sticks. I'll keep you posted on the progress on that.
I hope you enjoyed this and I hope it inspires you to create something too!
Thanks for reading!
